The next competitive advantage for Fortune 500 enterprises won't come from better products or cheaper operations. It will be determined by a question most leadership teams aren't yet asking:

Do we own our AI capabilities, or do we rent them?

Onshoring AI doesn't mean rejecting the cloud or building everything from scratch. It means owning the capability layer—the ability to govern, build, configure, and deploy AI agents and LLM-assisted systems internally, ensuring data stays completely in-house while preserving the ability to move quickly in a structured way.

This is a different framing than most enterprises are using today. The default approach is still "best of breed"—procure point solutions from multiple vendors, integrate them, hope the seams don't show.

That approach worked for traditional enterprise software. It's failing for AI.

Why AI Is Different

When you adopt a CRM or an ERP, you're buying a system of record. The boundaries are clear. The data model is known. Integration is painful but predictable.

AI capabilities don't work this way. Agents read documents, query databases, draft communications, execute workflows. They touch everything. They need access to your most sensitive data to be useful. And they're evolving faster than any enterprise procurement cycle can match.

Fragmenting this across five vendors means five security models, five governance approaches, five sets of sub-processors you've never audited—and no unified view of what your AI is actually doing.

The Onshoring Thesis

Enterprises that onshore their AI capabilities will have three structural advantages:

  1. Control: They set the governance policies, audit the actions, and own the data. No dependency on vendor roadmaps or third-party trust chains.
  2. Speed: They iterate in days, not quarters. When requirements change, they change—without filing support tickets or waiting for the next release.
  3. Accumulation: Every workflow they build, every agent they train, every procedure they refine becomes institutional knowledge. This compounds. Renting doesn't.

In our work deploying AI infrastructure for Fortune 500 enterprises and AmLaw 100 law firms, we've seen this pattern repeatedly: the organizations moving fastest are the ones who decided early that AI was infrastructure to own, not software to subscribe to.
